While her twin Jason was in the hospital we find out he is an AB blood type. Sookie doesn't have a blood-type, therefore her body won't accept any blood. Sounds like Sookie is lacking the Rhesus factor

It is Sookie's blood that allows vamps to walk in daylight. As the story goes faries where almost wipe from the face of the earth by the vampires years ago, others escape to the 'plane of the fairies'.

The red rain was planned especially to affect humans since the V's intended on inter-breeding with humans to create a new generation of V's, since large amounts of phosphorous are needed for a human to survive the pregnancy.
